Turf

Turf and new lawns

Pound for pound nothing else changes a garden as fast, but only if the ground gets the same attention as a patio base does. We strip the old growth, work the ground over, bring in screened soil where nothing will root, and butt the rolls up hard with the seams offset so they grow together before the first hot spell finds them.

  • Old lawn and weed growth stripped out, not turned in
  • Ground graded so the mower is not scalping a hump by month two
  • Screened topsoil where the existing ground is dead
  • Rolls butted hard, seams offset, edges trimmed to the line
  • Watering and first-cut advice before we leave

Levels

Sleeper beds, steps and walls

Plenty of gardens around Wickersley, Thorpe Hesley and the older parts of town step up or down. Rather than fighting that with an ever-thickening bed of mortar, it gets held: timber sleeper beds, stone and block retaining walls, and steps wide enough to carry a tray down.

  • Timber sleeper raised beds, single or stacked
  • Stone, block and rendered retaining walls with drainage behind
  • Steps set to a comfortable rise rather than whatever is left over
  • Split levels planned so each area has a use
  • Existing stone walling worked with rather than knocked out

Planting

Borders, beds and gravel margins

Hard landscaping on its own reads as a yard. Borders are what stop it. Planted beds along the boundaries, gravel margins that keep splash off fences and give an edge somewhere to die into, and structural planting that gives the paving something to sit against.

  • Planted borders along boundaries and house walls
  • Gravel, cobble and slate margins as a working edge detail
  • Structural shrubs, grasses and small trees
  • Bark and mulched beds that stay tidy between seasons
  • Edging that holds the line between bed, lawn and paving

Screening

Fencing and screening

Screening is what turns an overlooked plot into somewhere you will actually sit. Slatted panels behind a seating area, close board along the boundaries, and gates that are built rather than bought and hung.

  • Slatted screens behind seating and dining areas
  • Close board and panel fencing, posts concreted in
  • Gates hung to swing and latch properly
  • Screening set out with the deck and paving, not added afterwards
  • Boundary treatments matched across the whole garden

One programme

Planned together it hangs together. Done in stages it looks done in stages.

Levels, edges, drainage and the order things get built in all depend on each other. Priced as one job there are no compromises where two bits of work meet, and there is one price to weigh up instead of four.

Tell us about the garden

Send the form or pick the phone up. Someone comes out, walks the garden, checks the levels and how we get materials in, and you get a written price with the groundwork costed separately from the finish. The visit costs nothing and nobody rings you every fortnight afterwards.
